CDA focusing on turning Islamabad into ‘brand city’
ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) on Tuesday partnered to form a joint working group aimed at identifying avenues for enhanced cooperation between the two organisations, developing a workable plan with realistic, achievable goals.
The CDA on Tuesday hosted a delegation led by Jo Moir, Development Director from FCDO. The meeting, which also included participation from the Member Environment, Deputy Commissioner (ICT), and Director of the Municipal Corporation Islamabad (MCI), focused on exploring potential areas of collaboration to develop Islamabad into a ‘brand city’ to attract tourists and develop a unique image to set it apart from other cities.
According to a press release, CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa provided a comprehensive overview of CDA’s major initiatives aimed at improving Islamabad’s infrastructure and services through a multi-pronged approach and digitalisation. This includes boosting resource mobilisation and revenue generation to support development projects.
Additionally, he highlighted that the CDA is expanding tree plantation drives to enhance Islamabad’s green cover. Technological advancements are also a key focus, with the CDA implementing digitised parking management systems and utilising digital billboards for outdoor advertising. Furthermore, the CDA is committed to improved governance through IT solutions and digitisation of land records.
Discussions explored potential collaboration in several key areas. The CDA and FCDO will work together to explore new resource generation avenues, allowing the CDA to generate more funds for Islamabad’s development. Moreover, digitalising property tax collection for increased efficiency and transparency will too be focused on. Recognising the importance of sustainability, the collaboration will explore obtaining technical assistance for carbon credit initiatives.
The meeting also highlighted the potential of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) as a sustainable development model for Islamabad’s future. Collaboration will extend to improving solid waste management strategies and optimising urban property tax systems for a more equitable and efficient approach.
During the meeting, it was decided that a working group would be formed to identify avenues for enhanced cooperation between the two organisations, developing a workable plan for short, medium, and long-term goals and establishing timelines to achieve these objectives.
