Career counselling

CAREER counsellors play a crucial role in guiding the youth towards success and satisfaction, and in managing the challenges of the modern workforce. However, their absence in both public and private educational institutions is worrisome. Some may argue that many educational institutions cannot afford to provide this service.

However, this perspective utterly fails to recognise the long-term benefits of investing in our youth’s professional development to enable them to be a part of that workforce that is empowered, motivated and coordinated.

How can we bridge the gap between education and employment, and ensure that our younger ones are equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence that are necessary to pursue meaningful and fulfilling careers?

Recognising the importance of career counselling and allocating resources for it has to be a fundamental component of the educational system. This includes incorporating career counselling services into the curriculum of educational institutions. Also important is to equip our educators with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide effective guidance. Establishing partnerships with industry stakeholders to ensure that career advice is relevant, practical and up-to-date is also a critical requirement.

Moreover, promoting a culture of mentorship and peer support can help complement formal career counselling services and provide our youth with additional avenues for guidance and inspiration. Pakistan must prioritise career counselling services in both public and private educational institutions as a critical step towards empowering our youth and shaping a brighter future for generations to come.
