Lower Sindh areas get more rain

KARACHI: Light to moderate rain continued to lash parts of Karachi, Tharparkar, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar and Nawabshah districts on the second day running on Tuesday, inundating low-lying areas and streets in urban areas and large swathes of farmland in villages.

In Mirpurkhas, light rain continued intermittently in the city and adjoining towns of Kunri, Nabisar, Jhuddo, Digri, Kot Ghulam Mohammad, Naukot and Sindhri to the great delight of farmers who said that the rain at this time of the year was godsend as they were facing acute shortage of water.

Meanwhile, rainwater accumulated on roads and streets in the city and adjoining towns and power remained suspended during rain adding to frustration among people.

In Badin, a spell of heavy rain lashed the city for 15 minutes, starting at 2.00 pm. It had started raining lightly on Monday night and continued intermittently till Tuesday morning, inundating roads, streets and low-lying areas.

In Karachi, two men died in rain-related incidents when moderate to heavy rain hit several parts of the metropolis on the second consecutive day.

Gabol Town SHO Malik Ghulam Murtaza said that 16-year-old Hazrat Ali tried to charge his mobile phone in the estate office where he worked when he suffered an electric shock and died.

Jamshed Quarters SHO Imtiaz Husain said the victim was a watchman at Al-Rehman Heights off New M.A. Jinnah Road. He attempted to run a water-pumping machine during rain when he suffered the electric shock and died, said the official.

In Nawabshah, Abdullah Brohi suffered serious injuries when he was struck with lightening in old city area. He was rushed to Peoples Medical University Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

It rained moderately in Nawabshah, Sanghar and the nearby towns in the afternoon. Power supply went off immediately after the rain and rainwater inundated roads and streets.
