Brain drain

WITH hundreds of thousands of people leaving the country for greener pastures every year, Pakistan is losing its talented workforce at an alarming rate. This exodus is causing significant harm to the country’s overall development and progress.

The reasons for this brain drain are well known: political instability, limited job opportunities, and lack of research and growth opportunities for the young.

The rather unfavourable business environment and limited access to quality education and healthcare happen to be the contributing factors to the phenomenon.

Unfortunately, the consequences of this brain drain are far-reaching. We are losing our skilled workforce, compromising our future, and decreasing innovation and competitiveness.

As such, this will surely have a negative impact on the country in multiple ways, and increase the frustration level of those who cannot move out for their own personal or family reasons.

The government should take concrete steps to address this pressing issue. We need to improve political stability as well as the law and order situation. Also, we should increase job opportunities, invest in research and development, and create a favourable business environment.
