Rain brings mercury down in twin cities

RAWALPINDI: Late night rain in the twin cities brought down temperature to a minimum 21 and maximum 26 degrees Celsius.

In the last few days, mercury had risen to 38 degrees with the humidity level going up to 80 per cent. But, heavy rain brought relief to the people.

Citizens woke up to a cloudy weather on Sunday and mostly they enjoyed the weekend with traditional breakfast in Kashmiri Bazaar and Bhabara Bazaar. The use of air-conditioners reduced in the afternoon due to the cool breeze. People mostly opted to visiting parks on Sunday evening.

The Met office recorded 119 millimetres rain at Zero Point from Saturday night to Sunday morning, 29mm at Islamabad Airport, 26mm at Bokra and 17mm at Saidpur in Islamabad and 85mm at Chaklala, 55mm at Shamsabad, 27mm at Kutchery in Rawalpindi.

An official told Dawn that the monsoon currents from Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal were penetrating into the upper/central parts of the country. A westerly wave was also affecting upper/central parts of the country.

He said more rain-windstorm/thundershower was expected in Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Islamabad, northeast Balochistan, southeast/upper Sindh and Gilgit-Baltistan. Isolated heavy fall is likely in Kashmir, upper Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the period. Partly cloudy weather with light rain is expected at isolated places in coastal areas of Sindh.

However, the Met office warned of flooding in nullah in next 24 hours. Heavy rains may generate flash flooding in nullahs/streams of Kohat, Karak, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Peshawar, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Dir, Swat, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Attock, Talagang, Chakwal, Mianwali, Sialkot, Narowal, Jhelum, Gujarat, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Lahore, Hafizabad, Dera Ghazi Khan, Murree, Galliyat and Kashmir on August 11 night and August 12 morning.

Heavy downpour may cause urban flooding in Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Sialkot, Narowal, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Sargodha and Faisalabad.
