Karachi, other Sindh cities receive light to moderate showers

KARACHI: The ‘deep depression’ system fast approaching lower parts of the province from Rajasthan brought about light to moderate rainfall in a few cities, including Karachi, on Monday evening.

On Monday, the Met department recorded 47mm rain in Nagarparkar, Islamkot 18mm, Mitthi 17mm, Chachro 14mm and Diplo six mm, while traces were reported from Badin. Rainfall was also reported from Gharo in Thatta district and almost every area of Karachi division in the evening.

“The system is intense, moving westward and southwestward. As of now, there is no indication that it’s going to lose its severity and is expected to bring about very heavy to extremely heavy fall in lower Sindh,” shared Chief Meteorologist Dr Sardar Sarfaraz.

According to Dr Sarfaraz, the system is expected to bring about 400mm to 500mm plus rainfall during the four-day spell (Aug 27-Aug 30) particularly in Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Tharparkar, Tando Muhammad Khan and Tando Allah Yar.

“Karachi is also expected to get heavy rains, though not of the same intensity,” he said, adding Karachi might get around 150mm to 200mm during the spell starting from Wednesday till Friday.

The system, he pointed out, would likely spread to northeast Balochistan and southern parts of Punjab, bringing torrential rains over Khirthar and adjoining hills of Balochistan that might cause flash flooding in Dadu, Kambar Shahdadkot and Jamshoro districts during the forecast period.

Meanwhile, the Sindh government has advised fishermen to avoid going into deep sea till August 30, move their boats to safe places and take precautionary measures to avoid damages.
