Research promotion

STUDENTS enrolled in a bachelor of studies (BS) programme are required to complete approximately 30 courses to fulfil the degree requirements. At the level of higher education, a student’s learning experience can be greatly enriched by engaging in practical research work.

A practical application of knowledge through research not only deepens un- derstanding, but also enhances critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Just as medical education programmes mandate house jobs for fresh graduates before they are allowed to interact with patients independently, a similar approach should be adopted in BS programmes. By applying their theoretical knowledge in practical settings, students stand to gain valuable hands-on experience that will solidify their learning.

From my experience in microbiology, what I learned was significantly enhanced through participation in research pr- ogrammes. These research opportunities allowed me to test theories, explore new concepts, and contribute to real-world applications, providing insights that go beyond textbook learning.

Therefore, I strongly recommend that in the final year of all BS programmes across all higher education institutions, students should be required to undertake a research project. And this should be made a compulsory component of the curriculum. This will ensure universal participation.

Besides, such a requirement would drastically improve their understanding of the subject, and will better prepare them for professional challenges as well as opportunities in their respective fields. Hence, implementing this suggestion would truly ensure a deeper, more practical understanding of disciplines.
