Multan downpour breaks 48-year record

LAHORE/RAWALPINDI: The monsoon rains continued to pour across the province on Tuesday with Multan receiving the heaviest rain of 172 mm, breaking the city’s 48-year-old record of 134.5 mm rain in 1976.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Tuesday issued a new advisory stating that current spell of rainfall is likely to continue during the week with torrential rains in southern and central parts of the country.

The rain was also reported in other parts of southern Punjab, causing widespread flooding across the area.

In Multan, the maximum 172mm of rain was recorded at Chungi No. 9 Disposal Station area, breaking the city’s previous record of 134.5 mm in 1976. 137 mm of rain was recorded at Kerri Jammandan and 90 mm at Old Shujabad Road. Heavy rain flooded roads and streets in Multan causing problems for the problem.

Multan Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) Managing Director Khalid Raza Khan declared a rain emergency in the city and directed field staff from the sewerage and disposal station divisions to initiate operations for water drainage across the city.

During this period, the Managing Director instructed all disposal stations to operate at full capacity and personally monitored the ongoing water drainage operations throughout the city.

In Lahore, the weather of the city became pleasant after rainfall across various parts of the city on Tuesday.

According to the PDMA, Attock received the highest rainfall with 51 mm, followed by 46 mm in Jhelum, 42 mm in Chakwal, 32 mm in Rawalpindi, 31 mm in Sialkot, 27 mm in Bhakkar, 24 mm in Shorkot, and 10 mm in Murree.

PMD advisory

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Tuesday issued a new advisory stating that current spell of rainfall is likely to continue during the week with torrential rains in southern and central parts of the country.

The Met Office said that a deep depression currently over north of Gujarat (India), is likely to reach adjoining areas of Pakistan (eastern Sindh) over the next 24 hours.

Due to this weather system, strong monsoon currents are penetrating in the country (especially in southern parts). A westerly wave is also likely to affect upper parts of the country from 29th onwards. Under the influence of this weather system countrywide heavy rainfalls are expected from August 27 to 31st.

Sindh, Balochistan

In Sindh, the weather system is likely to bring widespread rain-wind/thundershower (scattered heavy falls with isolated very heavy falls) in Karachi, Hyderabad, Dadu, Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Shaheed Benazirabad, Jamshoro, Tando Allayar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tharparkar, Nagarparkar, Mithi, Mirpur Khas, Umarkot, Matiari, Sanghar, Sukkur, Ghotki, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Khairpur, Larkana, Jacobabad and Nausheroferoze from 27th to 31st August.

Widespread rain-wind/thundershower (with scattered heavy falls) is expected in Khuzdar, Kalat, Lasbella, Awaran, Naseerabad, Sibbi, Jaffarabad, Kohlu, Harnai, Dera Bugti, Zhob, Quetta, Ziarat, Sherani, Qila Abdullah, Qila Saifullah, Barkhan, Musa Khel, Loralai, Mastung, Bolan, Jhal Magsi, Kech, Panjgur, Gwadar, Jiwani, Pasni and Ormara from August 27 to 31st.

Punjab, KP

Rain-wind/thundershowers (with few heavy falls) are expected in Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Tala Gang, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, Faisalabad, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Okara, Pak­pattan, Kasur, Khushab, Sargodha, Mianwali, Bhakkar, Layyah, D.G. Khan, Rajanpur, Multan, Khan­ewal, Lohdran, Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Khanpur and Rahimyar Khan from Aug 27 to 31 with occasional gaps.

Rain-wind/thundershower (with isolated heavy falls) are expected in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Mala­kand, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Peshawar, Swabi, Nowshera, Mar­dan, Char­sadda, Hangu, Kurram, Orakzai, Waziristan, Bannu, Lakki Marwat and D.I. Khan from Aug 27 to 31.

Kashmir, GB

Rains-wind/thundershowers (with isolated heavy falls) are expected in Kashmir (Neelum valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, Mirpur) from Aug 27 to 31st with occasional gaps.

Rain-wind/thunderstorms (with isolated heavy falls) are expected in Gilgit-Baltistan (Diamir, Astore, Ska­rdu, Gilgit, Ghanche, Shigar) from Aug 27 to 31st with occasional gaps.

The PMD has warned that possible flood/inundation may occur in low-lying areas of Sindh, Baloch­istan and south/central Punjab.
