From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1949: Seventy-five years ago: Realistic tone

UPPER TOPA (Murree Hills): Chaudhri Ghulam Abbas, Supreme Head of the Azad Kashmir Government, welcomed here yesterday [Sept 3] the tone of realism indicated in the recent notes of President Truman and Mr Attlee addressed to the Prime Ministers of Pakistan and India. … [H]e expressed the hope that both President Truman and Mr Attlee would follow their gestures to their logical conclusion by exerting their moral pressure in bringing about an impartial and free plebiscite in Kashmir as soon as possible.

[Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies from Cairo,] “We are looking forward to the day when Pakistan will lead the Muslim world, rather Asia, and we are confident that the day is not far off,” observed the Iraqi Charge d’Affaires in Cairo, Mr Abdul Hamid el-Khanek. He was commenting on the proposed move of Chaudhri Khaliquzzaman to form an inter-Islamic peoples’ organisation. A bloc of all the Muslim countries, the Iraqi diplomat [said] … is necessary for our survival. In this age only powerful nations can live honourably and unless we are united, there is no future for us. … He deeply admired the rapid progress made by Pakistan in various spheres of its national life.
