Couple among three killed in road accidents
RAWALPINDI: Three people, including a couple were killed in separate road accidents in the Civil Lines and Rawat police areas on Wednesday, police said.
In the first accident, a pedestrian woman was hit and killed by a pickup van near the Civil Lines police station on Wednesday.
According to police investigating officer, Ms Rukhsana Saeed, 27, was going to Ammar Chowk from Katchery Chowk when she was knocked down reportedly by a pickup van near Jhanda ChiChi bridge killing her on the spot.
The IO said apparently it seems that she had been hit by a pickup van that sped off. However, efforts by the police were underway to trace the van with the help of CCTV cameras.
In the second road accident, a couple was killed after a car coming from the opposite direction hit their motorcycle on Chak Beli road on Wednesday.
Police said that Tabassum Nawaz with his wife Ms Sanam Tabassum were on their way to Rawalpindi on their motorcycle when a speeding car hit their bike from behind killing the woman on the spot and injuring her husband critically who later died on his way to hospital.
Muhammad Sheraz, resident of Dhamial lodged an FIR with the Rawat police saying that his nephew Tabassum Nawaz with his wife Sanam were on their way to Rawat to get their CNIC. When they reached near Mandhal, a speeding car, hit their motorcycle from behind.
The accused driver was yet to be traced by the police.
According to emergency services Rescue 1122, 42 people have been killed and more than 1,500 injured in road traffic accidents in August 2024.
They attributed a number of things for causing accidents, including speeding, carelessness when operating a vehicle, one-wheeling, making incorrect turns, and tire bursts.
The emergency services said that they have been trying to bring down the number of road accidents as public awareness, training programs in school and colleges have been continuing in this regard.
