Pakistan cueists power into last-16

ULAANBAATAR: Pakistan’s Asjad Iqbal pulled off a stunning upset at the Mongolia Snooker World Cup on Sunday, defeating reigning world champion Ali Alobaidli of Qatar 3-1 in a thrilling encounter.

Asjad, Pakistan’s national champion, showcased his skills with precise potting and strategic play. The 31-year-old took the first frame 59-36, but Alobaidli levelled with a dominant 63-26 win in the second. Asjad regained control, winning the next two frames 58-19 and 70-58.

Compatriot Awaisullah Muneer, 30, also advanced to the pre-quarterfinals with a 3-1 victory over Iran’s Siyavosh Mozayani.

Awaisullah, recent winner of the 6-red title in Riyadh, recovered from a slow start, losing the first frame 63-9. He rallied to win the next three frames 78-34, 59-50 and 73-13.

Both Pakistani cueists have secured direct spots in the pre-quarterfinals, underlining their strong form in the tournament.

The tournament continues on Monday with remaining group matches, followed by the knockout round starting on Tuesday.
