From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1949: Seventy-five years ago: Mao elected Chairman

HONG KONG: Mao Tse-Tung, leader of China’s Communist Party, was today [Sept 30] unanimously elected Chairman of the “Central Peoples’ Government of the Republic of China”, Peiping Communist Radio announced. Madame Sun Yat-Sen, widow of the founder of the Chinese Republic and General Chu Teh, Commander-in-Chief of the Communist Army were two of the six Vice-Chairmen elected.

Mao Tse-Tung and the Vice-Chairman and members of the Government Council were elected by secret ballot ... at the last session of the Peoples’ Consultative Conference, held in Peiping [Beijing]. All the 576 delegates at the session rose to their feet, applauded and shouted: “Long live Chairman Mao Tse-Tung and the Chinese Peoples’ Republic”, when the election results were announced, the Radio said. — News agencies
