From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1949: Seventy-five years ago: Trade policy soon
KARACHI: Consumers in Pakistan will equitably share the benefits of “no devaluation” with the producers. Pakistan’s new trade policy, based on this principle, will be announced in a day or two, it was … learnt in Karachi yesterday [Oct 6]. The official Imports Control and Exports Promotion Committees … had submitted their reports. Finishing touches … were being given to the readjustments in tariff regulations by the relevant committee.
… It was generally agreed that the Government should share, by reducing export duties, the loss of income with the producers of export goods whose prices were likely to show a downward trend due to devaluation in competitive countries.
[Meanwhile as reported by a staff correspondent in Karachi,] a 10-man trade mission on behalf of the Pakistan Chamber of Commerce is likely to be sent to Europe shortly, it was learnt… . The trade mission, during its two- month tour, will strengthen trade relations between Pakistan and the U.K., France, Italy, Switzerland and other countries of the European continent. Mr G. Allana, President of the Chamber of Commerce, will be the leader of the mission.
