Gur mela showcases rural culture, traditional foods

TOBA TEK SINGH: The University of Agriculture of Faisalabad (UAF) has opened its gur mela, a festival showcasing the colours of rural life and traditional dishes that attracted a large number of locals.

Students dressed in traditional attire set up stalls featuring sweets, saag, makai ki roti, lassi, and other rural delicacies.

The festival drew food enthusiasts eager to enjoy these cultural highlights.

In his address, Vice-Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmed Khan said that nations that neglect their cultural heritage risk disappearing from history.

He called for concerted efforts to preserve traditions and reconnect the younger generation with their cultural roots.

He also remarked on how modern lifestyles and food choices are contributing to societal and health issues, stressing the importance of simplicity in life.

Dr Iqrar spoke about the role of the ongoing UAF Kisan Mela, which runs until Oct 9, in strengthening the bond between farmers and agricultural scientists.

Various competitions, including the Kisan Convention, agricultural exhibition, cultural games and livestock contests are being organised to promote a spirit of competition and learning.

The event was also attended by Vice Chancellor of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore Dr Muhammad Younis, Sarwat Malik, Dr Nadeem Akbar and other dignitaries.
