‘Turf war’ claims student’s life

LAHORE: A student was allegedly shot dead in an armed clash between two student unions at a private university here on Tuesday on Raiwind Road.

The crossfire on the road forced many passers-by and others to run for shelter.

The student who died of bullet injuries was identified as Sajjad, a resident of Rajanpur.

The police claimed to have arrested one of the armed students while others fled the scene.

The police inquiries, however, couldn’t find out the causes of the clash as they were busy in raids for the arrest of the suspects behind murder of the young student.

About the incident, a police official said the students of the private university had formed separate groups to wield monopoly in and outside the varsity.

He said they used to scuffle with each other and many physical clashes have been reported to the varsity’s management but it did nothing to defuse tension and prevent any untoward incident.

The official said the police teams were trying to get footages of Safe City cameras and those installed privately to find out the details of the incident.

He expressed his resentment that the culture of forming gangs and groups by the young students of private educational institutes would vitiate the peace of the city as was witnessed on Tuesday when students who used to fight physically now stepped into armed clash too. The official said they have traced more names of the armed suspects.
