Child protection unit inaugurated in Swat

SWAT: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Child Protection and Welfare Commission (KPCPWC) in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) Pakistaninaugurated here a Child Protection Unit (CPU) to safeguard children’s rights and ensuring their safety and well-being in the region.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by the key government officials, civil society representatives, elders of the area and local children.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Shehzad Mehboob emphasised the vital role of the CPU in securing the safety of children. He also pledged full support from the district administration to ensure the success of the unit’s mission.

KPCPWC Deputy Chief Protection Officer Ijaz Mohammad Khan provided an overview of the child protection system in the province, detailing its evolution within the provincial legal framework. He highlighted that the CPU were operational in 21 districts, with plans to expand the programme to other districts. He informed that since its inception, his department had provided services to over 32,000 children, facing violence and at risk of protection issues.

Regional Police Officer Malakand Division Irfanullah addressed the audience on the critical role of law enforcement in child protection. He underscored that while the protection of all citizens was a core responsibility of the police, safeguarding vulnerable children was of prime importance.

Speaking on behalf of Unicef, child protection specialist Sohail Ahmad emphasised the importance of a comprehensive approach to child protection. He praised the quarters concerned for building an overall provincial child protection system and urged community engagement to create a safe, nurturing environment for all children.

The event concluded with remarks from chief guest Umara Khan, Additional Secretary for Social Welfare, Special Education, and Women Empowerment, who commended efforts of the relevant departments and reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable children.

Children from local organisations, including Zamung Kor and Khpal Kor Foundation, attended the event and received prizes for their stage performances.
