French ambassador praises achievements of Pakistani athletes
ISLAMABAD: To celebrate Pakistan’s remarkable achievements at the Paris Olympics 2024, French Ambassador Nicolas Galey hosted a reception in honor of gold medalist Arshad Nadeem and bronze medalist Haider Ali along with the rest of the country’s Olympic squad.
The reception held at the ambassador’s residence drew members of the diplomatic community and notable Pakistani parliamentarians.
Arshad Nadeem made history by winning Pakistan’s first ever individual Olympic gold medal in the javelin throw while Haider Ali secured a bronze in discus.
Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Galey praised the athletes for their extraordinary achievements and underscored the significance of their success.
“Two months ago, in July, we hosted many of you here before you flew to Paris for the Olympics and Paralympics. Today, we gather again to celebrate your triumphs. Pakistan’s delegation may not have been the largest, but what a success it was - with Arshad Nadeem’s gold in javelin and Haider Ali’s bronze in discus,” he said.
The ambassador spoke about his personal excitement during the Olympic competitions, recalling how he followed the javelin and discus events on television, thrilled by the historic wins.
“It was the first time in my life that I was so deeply engaged in these sports, watching with anticipation. When you won, it wasn’t just a victory for Pakistan - it was a moment shared by all of us, including those of us living in Pakistan,” he remarked.
Ambassador Galey also reflected on the words of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games, who said participation was more important than winning.
“You competed with all your strength, and for that, you deserve the respect and admiration of your country. Your efforts, often in solitude, overcoming countless obstacles, have inspired millions of Pakistanis,” he said.
Reflecting on the atmosphere in Paris during the Games, the ambassador noted how the city was transformed by the spirit of competition and unity.
“In a world filled with tragedy and suffering, you, the athletes, have shown us the power of effort, rivalry, and solidarity. You brought the magic of the Games to life, and that is something truly remarkable,” he said.
The ambassador also praised Arshad Nadeem’s memorable sportsmanship with his Indian competitor Neeraj Chopra, during a press conference, which became a symbol of mutual respect and friendship. He expressed the hope that Nadeem and Haider’s successes would inspire future generations of Pakistani athletes and encourage greater support for high-level sports in the country.
The ambassador the Pakistani delegation’s achievements would resonate far beyond the Olympic podium.
“Today, you can proudly say ‘mission accomplished,’ and we look forward to witnessing even more success from Pakistani athletes in the future,” he said.
