From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1974: Fifty Years Ago: Mardan blast

PESHAWAR: Two students were killed and 20 other persons were injured, three of them seriously, in a bomb explosion in Mardan this morning [Oct 12]. Three other explosions took place in Peshawar this evening, but caused no loss of life. Some damage to property including window panes of the PIA building, the Peshawar Club and the Dak Bungalow have, however, been reported. [Meanwhile,] an explosion took place amidst rose plants in front of the main entrance to Hotel Intercontinental here [Rawalpindi] late tonight [Oct 12], injuring a man and a woman. Another woman escaped injuries. The S.P. of Islamabad … said … that round-the-clock search is going on to track the culprits behind yesterday’s explosions in the cinema house and the restaurant. — News agencies

[Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies from London,] the British Labour Party had won the general elections yesterday [Oct 11] with a thin majority of three seats in the House of Commons. … But Mr [Harold] Wilson declared … that his Government could still go on with its Socialist programme. … However, trouble within Labour’s own ranks could erupt over the planned referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Community.
