Sherry briefs Fafen delegation on amendments

ISLAMABAD: Vice President Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Sherry Rehman at a meeting briefed a delegation from the Free and Fair Election Network (Fafen) on the draft constitutional amendments concerning the establishment of federal and provincial constitutional courts.

In principle, Fafen representatives said they agreed with the PPP on the creation of a constitutional court, a statement issued here said.

Ms Rehman said, “As part of the PPP’s initiative to enlarge the debate on the creation of a constitutional court and judicial reform, it was good to meet with FAFEN representatives. Shared the draft that Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had also invited inputs on in a robust search for transparency and inclusion. Appreciate that National Coordinator Rashid Chaudhry and the FAFEN team agreed in principle with our proposal for a constitutional court, while we exchanged views on a number of important issues related to broader reform agendas.”

She stated that the purpose of these meetings was to take all stakeholders into confidence regarding the establishment of the constitutional courts.

“We want the 26th Constitutional Amendment to be as transparent and consensual as the 18th Amendment,” she remarked.

The delegation also presented their other recommendations related to broader reform initiatives to Ms Rehman.

The delegation included National Coordinator Rashid Chaudhry, Salahuddin, and Jubilee Bano.
