Two die as mini-truck collides with car in Karachi’s Bahria Town

KARACHI: Two people were killed and 22 others, including women and children, were injured when a mini-truck and car collided in Bahria Town Karachi (BTK) on Tuesday evening, police and rescue services officials said.

An Edhi Foundation spokesperson identified the deceased as truck driver Abdul Latif and Raheema Salman.

Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said most of the injured persons were in serious condition as they had suffered multiple injuries.

Gadap City SHO Sarfaraz Jatoi said that both the vehicles were badly damaged in the accident.

Malir SSP Kashif Abbasi told Dawn that the police were probing the circumstances that led to the accident.

A police official, who wished not to be named, said that the mini-truck carrying 20 people had lost its way to BTK, adding that the people in it were not residents of Bahria Town but of a village in Thatta district 30 kilometres away from the housing scheme.

He opined that apparently the truck driver was not aware of the routes inside the housing society. He lost control and hit the car.

The critically injured persons were shifted to the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Trauma Centre of the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi and the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre in six ambulances.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed regret over the deaths and directed Karachi Commissioner and deputy commissioner-East for extending all possible facilities to the injured persons.
