Baloch students protest against admission denial at IUB

BAHAWALPUR: The office-bearers and members of the Baloch Students Council at a press conference here on Thursday complained of the denial of admissions under reserved seats at the Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB) as nominated by the directorate of Balochistan.

Saqlain Baloch, a council representative, said the IUB officials had refused admissions, citing a lack of funds from both the federal and Punjab governments. He said Baloch students already enrolled at the university have yet to receive their scholarships, which were previously awarded in past years.

The council issued an ultimatum, demanding that admissions and scholarships be granted within four days. Saqlain Baloch warned that failure to meet these demands would result in a sit-in protest until their grievances are addressed.

additional charge: The Punjab government has assigned additional charge of the post of the vice chancellor of Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB) to Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Engineering and Technology (MNSUET), Multan, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kamran.

According to an IUB press release issued here on Thursday, the Higher Education Department (HED) issued a notification after which Prof. Dr. Kamran assumed the charge.

The appointment of Dr Kamran will be for a period of four months during which a permanent and regular VC may be selected, announced and appointed for a four-year term as IUB vice chancellor.

The notification No.SO.(Univ) 4-2/2020 issued by the HED secretary said that Prof Kamran would hold additional charge of the post of IUB VC for a period of four months w.e.f. Oct 17, 2024 or till the appointment of a regular incumbent whichever is earlier.

The IUB release added that the additional charge-holder VC Prof Kamran has extensive experience in teaching and research as well as management. He did his PhD computer engineering in digital circuit design from Beijing Institute of Technology China in 2007.

He was appointed Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Engineering and Technology, Multan, VC on Sept 10, 2022.

Earlier, he was serving as dean faculty of electrical engineering, University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore.

MURDER: A man was allegedly murdered by his nephew here on Thursday.

Reports said Akram Bhatti was killed by his nephew Tauqeer Bhatti in Gali Mukhian, Machli Bazaar in Bahawalpur’s old-walled city area.

According to the police, both the suspect Tauqeer, and the deceased, Akram, were involved in drug trafficking and had an ongoing dispute related to their illegal business.

The Kotwali police have registered a murder case against Tauqeer, who is at large. Akram’s body has been shifted to the morgue at Bahawal Victoria Hospital (BVH) for a postmortem examination.
