SCO summit

THE Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, hosted by Pakistan, caught the attention of regional and international players alike. The high-profile event was a great moment for Pakistan in terms of diplomatic and economic relations. As such, hosting the important summit provided Pakistan a chance to increase its status internationally.

However, it is fair to say that Pakistan confronts a significant diplomatic chall-enge within the SCO owing to the presence of India. While the SCO presents a platform for dialogue between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, meaningful progress in bilateral issues is unlikely.

While Pakistan will hold its head high for having been a gracious host, absolute returns in the short term are unlikely. That is disappointing for the residents of Islamabad who had their daily routines disrupted, with roads blocked, businesses stalled, and a heightened security presence.

For many, the summit meant a pause in their everyday lives. No wonder, many were actually seen raising the question: what exactly is in it for Pakistan?
