Over 14,900 suspects arrested in capital in nine months: police

ISLAMABAD: The capital police on Monday claimed to have arrested 14,926 suspects in connection with different criminal activities and recovered cash and valuables worth Rs1.55 billion from January 1 to September 30.

It may mentioned here that that during the period the police registered 8,566 incidents of dacoities, robberies, snatching, burglaries, theft and automobile thefts in which culprits looted or stole cash and valuables worth over Rs4 billion, senior officers told Dawn.

Out of the total 8,566, there were 5,339 cases of dacoities, robberies, snatching, burglaries, and theft in which criminals looted or stole cash and valuables worth Rs2,831,412,232. Moreover, gold ornaments weighing 3,846 tola worth Rs1,053,804,000 were also looted or stolen during the period.

Furthermore, 403 vehicles, 3,412 motorcycles and 4,300 mobile phones were also either looted or stolen during the period.

A spokesman for the police on Monday said the police carried out an extensive crackdown against criminal elements in the last nine months to maintain peace and tranquility. In this regard, the Islamabad police arrested a total of 14,926 suspects involved in different criminal activities and recovered cash and valuables worth over Rs1.55 billion from their possession.

Moreover, 1,318 members of 557 gangs involved in robberies were also arrested.

Additionally, 3,460 suspects involved in tampering activities and property crimes such as theft, robbery, burglary, vehicles and motorcycle theft were arrested. Police teams also recovered cash, vehicles and motorcycles from their possession.

“The Islamabad police also carried out extensive operations against those possessing illegal weapons, and arrested 1,684 accused and recovered 95 rifles, 29 carbines, 1,374 pistols, and 209 daggers from their possession.”

The police also conducted “indiscriminate operations against proclaimed offenders, court fugitives and target offenders and arrested 4,314 accused.”

DIG Islamabad Syed Ali Raza said the police were utilising all available resources to ensure eradication of drug dealers and criminal elements from the federal capital.

Mr Raza said the Islamabad police will bring those involved in heinous crime of drug and alcohol trafficking to justice.

Citizens were urged to immediately report suspicious individuals or activities to their respective police stations, police helpline or via the “ICT 15” app, he added.
