From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1974: Fifty Years Ago: Calls for aid
UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has called for urgent, enlightened and concrete measures to aid the developing countries hard-hit by the current economic crisis. Participating in the debate on the statement of the World Bank President, Mr Robert S. McNamara, Pakistan representative to the Economic and Social Council … Mian Qadruddin, said that development assistance was an “economic and social necessity”. In his address … Mr McNamara … had made a fervent call to assist the developing countries which have been seriously affected by global inflation. Accepting that some benefits had accrued to some … developing countries through recent improvement in commodity prices, the Pakistan representative said this phenomenon was essentially of temporary nature.
[Meanwhile, as reported by our Islamabad Bureau,] Pakistan and India are likely to hold two conferences … next month to discuss resumption of trade, and matters concerned with civil aviation. The talks were agreed upon at the India-Pakistan meeting held in Islamabad last month which led to the restoration of postal and telecommunication links.
