Potentially good

THIS is with reference to the report ‘Parliament burns midnight oil to clear 26th Constitutional Amendment’ (Oct 21). The day marked a significant moment in Pakistan’s legislative history.

The constitutional amendments, one hopes, will lead to the introduction of significant changes in several critical areas. While there has been much talk in the national media and social circles about the various drafts that preceded the final version, the amendment has the potential to bring about several positive changes if implemented with careful attention to transparency, accountability and judicial independence.

It may ensure specialised handling of political and inter-governmental disputes, thereby depoliticising the judiciary and improving the efficiency of the legal process. It may foster a more balanced and transparent system to ensure high-level appointments reflect democratic values. Finally, it may strengthen national inte-grity as well as accountability within the judiciary.

While concerns about the potential for political interference remain, the ame-ndment offers a framework for enhancing the independence of the judiciary, pro-moting democratic oversight, and ensuring more inclusive representation in key institutions.

The true measure of success, however, will depend on the firm commitment to upholding these reforms in practice while ensuring that they effectively contribute to a balanced and transparent system.
