Dacoity suspect gets 23-year jail term for killing cop

SAHIWAL: Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Special Judge Ziaullah Khan handed down 23-year rigorous imprisonment (RI), along with Rs200,000 fine to a suspect, who has shot a policeman dead during a raid in Arifwala in 2023.

According to prosecution, the victim, Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Muhammad Ashraf, posted at Daniwal Police Station, Vehari district, in 2023.

On Oct 28, 2023, ASI Ashraf, along with Arifwala Saddar police team, conducted a raid in the village, where a dacoity suspect, Sadaf Zia, was hiding.

During the raid, Zia opened fire on the police party, leaving ASI Asharaf dead on the spot.

Arifwala Saddar police registered a case against Zia under section 324, 353, 186, 224, 148, 149 and 7-ATA on the complaint of ASI Qasir Manzoor.

Announcing the verdict on Thursday, the ATC judge handed down 23-year RI and Rs200,000 fine to the convict.
