Wonder Craft: Footstool

Many of us have hardboard rolls left over at home, whether they come from kitchen towels, foil or cling wrap. So, what do you do with these?

Ask me, and I can give you a dozen ideas for using them in DIY crafts to make them useful. In tough times, this not only helps save finances, but is a great way to conserve as much reusable material as we can.

Today’s craft is yet another way to make your life easier, using everyday leftover items that are easily available at home. You’ll find this footstool quite handy to use around the house!

Items you need:

  1. Kitchen towel/foil or cling wrap rolls (Three or four)

  2. Cardboard from any empty cardboard boxes

  3. One large rice plate

  4. Felt sheet (colour of your choice)

  5. White glue

  6. Hot glue

  7. Scissors

  8. Pencil

Directions:

  1. Draw the size of a rice plate on the cardboard and cut out that circle, as shown in pictures 2 and 3.

  2. Take another piece of cardboard, draw the same circle, and cut it out. You need at least three layers of cardboard circles so that your footstool is sturdy and doesn’t break easily, see pictures 4 and 5.

  3. Place the cardboard circle on the felt sheet and cut it one inch larger than the cardboard circle, picture 6.

  4. Now, make diagonal cuts around the extra one-inch of the felt so you can easily wrap it around the cardboard, picture 7.

  5. With the help of an adult, carefully glue the extra felt around the circle, pictures 8, 9 and 10.

  6. Your base for the footstool is ready. Now, turn it over and mark the spots on all sides where you will attach the rolls, picture 11.

  7. Cut small square pieces out of cardboard and glue them to one end of the rolls to help them stick more firm to the base, picture 12.

  8. Carefully glue the rolls to the underside of the base using a hot glue gun.

Voila! Your footstool is ready, made with minimal supplies that were easy to find. This stool can be used for placing toys or other light objects. Keep in mind that it’s not actually sturdy enough to be used as a footstool for sitting on.
