From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1949: Seventy-five years ago: Minimum jute price

DACCA: Announcing the Government’s jute policy at a Press conference today [Oct 25], Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan declared that the minimum price for loose bottom quality jute had been fixed at Rs 23 per maund at all baling centres. “Our anxiety is not only to ensure a minimum for jute growers but also to keep the trade going,” the Prime Minister emphasised. …

Replying to a question, the Prime Minister said: “We will sell our jute to someone else if India fails to lift her quota. We have been receiving offers from foreign countries for more jute but every time we had to give less because of our commitments to India under the agreement.”

[Meanwhile, according to news agencies in Lahore,] the application of new techniques of fish production thrashed out at the recently held United Nations Scientific Conference at Lake Success, might considerably help East Pakistan to solve its food problem. This view was expressed by Dr Nazir Ahmad East Pakistan’s Deputy Director of Fishers, and a Pakistan delegate to the Scientific Conference… .
