From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1949: Seventy-five years ago: Indian spy ring

KARACHI: The Pakistan authorities are believed to have unearthed a notorious gang of Indian spies who, after being fully trained at regular schools for saboteurs and spies in India, are adroitly smuggled across the border to conduct espionage and other fifth column activities in Pakistan on an organised and pre-planned basis. Recent arrests of some members of this gang from different parts of Pakistan are stated to have elicited confessionary statements revealing a remarkable degree of similarity.

Believed to be component parts of a machinery geared up … for extensive espionage work not only in Pakistan but also in other Muslim countries these made-to-order spies are taught amongst other things the rudiments of Islam and the methods of eliciting information and then passing it across the border. To make them absolutely safe in Pakistan they are circumcised and given Muslim names. …

The spies arrested … have given a connected story regarding the organisation of spy schools in India which give regular training to Sikhs and Hindus for organised spying and sabotage in Pakistan, and which are working full-steam to turn out a host of such trained fifth columnists.
