Website review: Discover historical connections!

During history lectures, or reading history chapters, we explore the lives of famous figures and the years they spent making history, we often encounter others from different fields who lived during the same time. This intriguing overlap sparks curiosity about their connections and influences, revealing how closely intertwined their timelines truly are.

While searching for one such famous personality and their timeline, I discovered another figure and then another. This led me to this wonderful site, Parallel Lives, which serves as a one-stop solution for studying famous figures and their timeline.

Parallel Lives is an interactive timeline created by Jan Willem Tulp (an independent data experience designer) who brings history to life by showing famous figures who lived at the same time across diverse fields such as politics, science, religion, culture and arts. The site focuses on figures from approximately 4000 BC to the present day. You can scroll through centuries, filter by categories and zoom in for detailed views of overlapping lives.

For example, the overlap between William Shakespeare and Galileo Galilei is outstanding as both personalities lived during the late 16th and early 17th centuries, a period rich in cultural and scientific advancements. Shakespeare’s contributions to literature coincided with Galileo’s groundbreaking work in astronomy, this shows how the arts and sciences evolved side by side, shaping the intellectual landscape of their time. Thus, you can actually see famous historical figures in various fields making history at the same time.

If you are curious who was composing symphonies while the other was inventing the light bulb, check out the site
