Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has said he would offer “heartfelt congratulations” to Donald Trump after the Republican candidate claimed victory in the US presidential election, Reuters reports.

“I want to bring the Japan-US alliance to a higher level, working closely with the incoming President Trump,” Ishiba told reporters at the prime minister’s Office.

“I will endeavor to have contact with Trump as soon as possible.”
