Credibility is at stake

RECENTLY, a sub-inspector of police in Islamabad was charged with abusing minor children and detaining them illegally. While he was suspended, the horrifying incident has raised doubts over the credibility of law-enforcement personnel, and highlighted the grave violation of human rights that takes place in police custody.

The sub-inspector concerned detained two children aged 10-12 years for two days during which he abused them. Such acts weaken the trust of public in law enforcement agencies whose duty is to protect the people and vulnerable segments of society.

To ensure accountability, we should demand regular inspectional procedures as well as comprehensive training for police officers on the rights of children. Moreover, there should be zero tolerance for any type of abuse anywhere.

The case is a wake-up call for society to fight for a system that is more comprehen- sive, and is able to hold law-enforcement personnel accountable for their follies and wrongdoings. It is imperative that we invest in building a society that upholds the dignity of children and ensures their safety.

Protecting the rights of our children and taking care of their wellbeing is our collective responsibility, and, to accomplish this task, the nation must act decisively.
