Annual Lok Mela opens

ISLAMABAD: Celebrating five decades of cultural preservation, Lok Virsa marked its 50th anniversary on Friday with the grand opening of the annual Lok Mela.

The event was inaugurated by Secretary of the National Heritage and Culture Division Hassan Ajmal Jami as the chief guest at Lok Virsa’s open-air theatre.

The ceremony was attended by diplomats, provincial representatives, artisans, artists, musicians, and a diverse array of guests.

Lok Virsa Executive Director Muzaffar Ali Burki welcomed guests and highlighted the festival’s role in fostering cultural unity.

He emphasised the importance of empowering local artisans and promoting the country’s rich heritage, extending gratitude to international participants from Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Uzbekistan, and Indonesia for their contributions to the International Pavilion.

Hassan Ajmal Jami praised Lok Virsa’s efforts in showcasing Pakistan’s authentic cultural image and reiterated the government’s dedication to promoting Pakistan’s cultural heritage globally.

The inaugural event also honoured two distinguished artisans, Sheikh Mohammad Yusuf and Sania from Kalash, for their exceptional contributions to traditional crafts. They were presented with a turban and shawl.

The festival will feature traditional music and dance performances, exhibitions of handicrafts, artwork and culinary specialties.
