Movie review: SpongeBob Squarepants — Kreepaway Kamp

SpongeBob SquarePants Kreepaway Kamp is a special TV movie on Nickelodeon that combines nostalgia with Halloween. Where all characters were invited for a reunion at Kamp Koral, a place of great importance for all of them.

The movie follows SpongeBob, Patrick and the gang as they travel to a spooky camp after receiving a mysterious invitation. Soon, they find themselves in unexpected trouble at the site, where the once-fun camp has become a place of dread. Their bus is destroyed, the helicopter crashes, the bridge blows up and the tunnel is blocked — every possible escape route is cut off. The gang is stuck and needs a way out.

To add to their troubles, they are also stalked by a mysterious figure lurking in the shadows as campers start disappearing one by one. They arrive as a large group, but slowly dwindle down to just a few. The characters look scary at times, but with friends around and a team to work with, the scare sometimes does vanish from their minds.

The humour that makes the show popular with kids is still there, but the 46-minute movie also brings a playful twist that mixes elements of competition, teamwork and mystery. What seems like a horror movie at first is actually a fun, light-hearted adventure. The movie delivers the same banter, slapstick comedy and mild suspense as the original series.

The movie is packed with fun references to past Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years episodes, like ‘Who’s Complaining,’ ‘Squisery,’ and ‘The Treasure of Kamp Koral’. It’s both sad and funny to see what happens to the treasure at the end.

The movie brings a woodland setting to the undersea world, blending bright and eerie tones to keep the mood light, yet mysterious. It sometimes feels like a Scooby-Doo adventure. Just when you think you know who’s behind the disappearances, a new character appears. Directed by Dave Cunningham, the movie is a surprise package best enjoyed at home or on streaming platforms.
