TIPS FOR STAYING SECURE AND AVOIDING TEMPTATION

Think before you post

This is important, and that’s why on top of the tips. Before you share any content on social media, ask yourself if it is necessary and appropriate to share. Consider the potential impact on the privacy, security and the feelings of you and those involved. Avoid posting real-time updates about your location or plans. If you think it’s just unnecessary, and wouldn’t make any difference even if you didn’t post it, stop right there.

Adjust privacy settings

Privacy settings on social media should be carefully reviewed to ensure that only trusted friends or connections can view your posts. Consider creating private groups or lists for sharing content with specific individuals, content that shouldn’t be visible to the public.

I agree, that there is a strong temptation in getting likes; the more likes you get, the happier and more excited you feel. This can quickly turn into a competition, comparing your likes and engagement with those of friends, and thinking, “They got this many likes in so little time.”

But this temptation can ruin everything, leading you to overshare for validation rather than sharing thoughtfully!

Limit personal information

Never share your ‘sensitive’ personal details. Sensitive details include your home address, phone number, your siblings’ name or information about their school, your parents’ name and their work details and also financial information. In my opinion, you should never share personal stuff in your profile that is public.

The geotagging

Always disable the geotagging setting on your phone. This can prevent your location from being shared in posts and photos. This reduces the risk of revealing your whereabouts to potential threats.

Practice digital detox

At this age, physical activity is essential, you don’t need the strain of constant screen time. Taking regular breaks from social media is important, not just to resist temptation, but also to reconnect with your home and family.

Be mindful of others

Respect the privacy of others when posting content that involves them. Obtain consent before sharing photos or information that includes other people, and be considerate of their preferences.
