MQM-P consults party leaders on 27th amendment bill to empower local govts

KARACHI: Amid rumours of differences within the party’s own ranks, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) held a high-level meeting of its office bearers on Sunday to consider options to build momentum for the 27th constitutional amendment aimed at empowering local government system, which is a long-standing demand of the party.

A brief statement issued by the party said that the meeting was attended by senior party leaders.

They discussed different issues, including national political scenario, performance of the government and the draft of the 27th constitutional amendment bill.

The meeting, chaired by federal Education Minister and senior convener of the party Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqi and all elected members of National and Sindh Assemblies, also discussed different issues in Karachi constituencies which were won by the party.

“The party leadership briefed the meeting participants about the draft of the 27th Constitutional Amendment and significance of the Article 140-A of the Constitution,” said the statement.

“They also discussed different strategies and options for coordination with different political parties to build consensus on 27th Constitutional Amen­dment. The participants also shared their thoughts on funding being offered by the Centre for development in Urban areas of Sindh.”
