CONTROVERSIAL AMENDMENT
CONTROVERSIAL AMENDMENT: The 26th Constitutional Amendment, despite the controversy surrounding its passage through parliament, has the potential to bring about several positive changes if implemented with due attention to transparency, accountability and judicial independence. While concerns about the potential for political inter-ference remain, the amendment offers a framework for enhancing the independence of the judiciary, promoting democratic oversight, and ensuring more inclusive representation in key institutions. The true measure of success, however, will depend on the commitment to upholding these reforms in practice, ensuring they contribute to a more balanced and transparent democratic system in Pakistan.

ADDITIONAL JUDGES: The recent legislation increasing the number of Supreme Court judges is a step in the right direction. Pakistan’s population has increased dramatically over the years, but the number of judges had remained stagnant since the 1990s. The increase will be beneficial in reducing the backlog of cases and improving access to justice by providing quick hearings. It will result in improved rule of law, and in upholding the rights of the people across the country. Indeed, a coherent and responsive judicial system will help the country in its stabilisation process.

BOXING POTENTIAL: Pakistanis are naturally gifted with various talents and have immense potential in physical sports, particularly in boxing. Hussain Shah, the boxer, had won a bronze medal back in 1988 in the Seoul Olympics. This indicates the exceptional talent the country has, which is unfortunately neither explored nor polished and utilised. All of this talent goes down the drain due to a lack of funding and limited training facilities. The government should utilise the talent of bright youngsters and help them embrace their full potential to make the country proud.
