OVER the last year or so, opposition leaders and workers have been holding protest demonstrations, demanding the release of their incarcerated party leader. The government’s treatment of these protesters has raised serious concerns about its cond-

uct. Instead of fostering an environment of fair governance, the authorities seem to be driven by personal vendettas. The country’s Constitution guarantees the citizens the right to freedom of speech and movement, and the right to hold peaceful protests. However, in practice, these rights are often violated.

Recent events have escalated to tragic levels. During the recent protest, it is beli-eved, lives were lost after police resorted to shelling. The heavy-handed approach has only exacerbated the tension.

The government’s recent actions, including attempts to ban the opposition party, and the use of force to quell protests, reflect an increasingly authoritarian stance. The government must recognise the impo-

rtance of upholding the rights guaranteed by the Constitution, including the right to peaceful protest. Rather than resorting to violence and repression, the authorities must engage in dialogue, provide adequate security during protests, and allow the protesters to express their grievances peacefully. Only through dialogue, respect for the rule of law, and a commitment to justice can Pakistan move towards a more inclusive and peaceful society.

It is the government’s responsibility to uphold the Constitution and protect the rights of all individuals, regardless of their political affiliations. The rule of law must prevail, and peaceful protests should never be met with violence.
