From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1949: Seventy-five years ago: False Indian report
DACCA: The report published in the Indian Press on Nov 30 in connection with the fall in jute price in Pakistan is incorrect,[] says a Press note issued by the Pakistan Jute Board. The Press note adds: “There has been no sales made to France, nor has jute been sold in any part of East Pakistan at Rs 5 per maund. The firms which have associated themselves with the Government and the Jute Board to work a scheme, formulated by Pakistan Government, have been functioning and there has been full co-operation both from the Government of East Pakistan and the traders.”
The average of the whole province taking white jute and tossa together is well above the minimum rates fixed by the Government… . “An estimate of Rs 10 per maund as the average price of Pakistan jute is therefore also wrong.”
[Meanwhile, according to news agencies from Hong Kong,] The Communist Government in Peking has announced that Oct 1 has been chosen as National Day of the Chinese Peoples Republic. The day will be the anniversary of the founding of the Republic this year. It was recommended as the day for national festival by the National Committee of the Peoples Consultative Council early in October.
