ISLAMABAD: The Romanian embassy commemorated 106 years since the landmark unification of its country, emphasising national consciousness, unity and strength of democratic values.

Diplomats and local dignitaries congratulated Romanian Ambassador Dan Stoenescu on his country’s national day.

Speaking at the event, Romanian Ambassador Dan Stoenescu highlighted the significance of December 1, 1918, in Romanian history, a moment that symbolised the nation’s maturity and resolve to overcome crises with confidence and unity.

Reflecting on 35 years since the fall of the iron curtain, Ambassador Stoenescu described Romania’s journey from totalitarianism to democracy amidst a complex international landscape.

“The illegal, unjustified, and unprovoked aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, along with instability and radicalism, marks this challenging period,” he said.

Mr Stoenescu emphasised Romania’s steadfast commitment to determination and solidarity, calling these values essential not only for Romania but for global stability.

“With a predictable foreign policy and democratic principles, Romania continues to play a critical role in ensuring security in the Black Sea region and Nato’s eastern flank, while extending unwavering support to Ukraine,” he added.

The ambassador also highlighted Romania’s integration into powerful international alliances.

“Today, Romania is part of Nato, the strongest collective security alliance protecting over a billion people, and the European Union, a vibrant union of sovereign states united by shared democratic values, rights, prosperity and culture,” he added.

Discussing bilateral ties with Pakistan, Ambassador Stoenescu expressed appreciation for the enduring friendship between the two nations, which this year marked 60 years of diplomatic relations.

“Pakistan is an important partner for Romania, and our mutual commitment has fostered fruitful political dialogue and pragmatic cooperation in areas of shared interest,” he said.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Syed Tariq Fatemi also addressed the gathering, congratulating the Romanian ambassador and acknowledging the deep historical and personal ties between the two nations.

Mr Fatemi highlighted areas of collaboration in trade, commerce and defence and appreciated Romania’s generosity in sharing knowledge and expertise with Pakistan.

He cited instances such as assisting Romanians to evacuate from Afghanistan and assistance from Romania for Pakistani citizens fleeing Ukraine. These experiences, he said, had forged strong bonds between the two countries.

The event underscored the shared commitment of Romania and Pakistan to further deepen ties and advance bilateral cooperation, particularly within the framework of the European Union-Pakistan partnership.
