Protest erupts in Khar over power outages

BAJAUR: Residents of Khar town in tribal district took to the streets to protest the prolonged suspension of power supply in the area.

Scores of residents from various areas and streets, including traders, political, and social activists, gathered on Khar bypass road, chanting slogans against the Tribal Electric Supply Company (Tesco).

The protesters alleged that most areas of Khar town, the district’s most populous region and headquarters, had been without electricity for the past week.

The protesters, who had blocked the Khar bypass road to all traffic, mentioned that senior officials of Tesco, during a meeting with a delegation of notables had promised to restore the electricity supply by Saturday (Dec 14). Khar neighbourhood council chairman Anwar Hussain, Khar traders’ association president Wajid Ali Shah and several others addressed the demonstration, calling the one-week suspension of power supply across the entire Khar town a great injustice to its residents.

The protesters demanded the immediate restoration of the power supply in the area and warned of a massive demonstration if the electricity was not restored by today (Monday).

They blocked the busy Khar bypass road for more than an hour but ended their protest when a team of district administration officials assured their leaders that the electricity would be restored within an hour.
