Punjab lead at Quaid Games

ISLAMABAD: Punjab led the table with 77 medals on Monday, the third day of the Quaid-e-Azam Inter-Provincial Games here at the Jinnah Stadium of the Pakistan Sports Complex.

Punjab’s medals tally includes 35 gold, 29 silver and 13 bronze while second-placed Khyber Pakh­tun­khwa have earned 23 medals (five gold, nine silver, nine bronze). Islamabad are third with 31 medals (five gold, five silver and 21 bronze).

Gilgit-Baltistan have won four bronze medals so far.

Punjab’s weightlifter Muhammad Yahya won gold medal in the +96kg event.

Yahya was followed by silver medallist Israr Ali Soomro of Sindh and Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s bronze winner Bilawal Asghar.

Meanwhile, four other Punjab weightlifters — Mohammad Ali Akbar (81kg), Mudabir Zeshan (89kg) and Haider Shakeel Butt (96kg) — also won gold.

In karate, Balochistan’s Mir Hamza Kasi won gold in the -75kg event, Sujal seized the -67kg gold for Punjab, Sindh’s Talha Rafiq bagged the -60kg title while Mohammad Abrar of KP claimed the -55kg gold.

In the women’s -61kg category, Hamna Qamar of Punjab won gold while Maham Batool earned the -55kg title for Punjab while Sindh’s Nabihah Jamal clinched the -50kg gold.

In women’s discuss throw event on Sunday, Najmul Huda won AJK’s first gold (26.88m). She was followed by KP’s Manali Bibi (25.41m) and Aiman Shahzad (23.11m), also of KP.

The Games comprising 15 disciplines conclude on Dec 19.
