Five jailed for involvement in illegal kidney transplantation
TAXILA: A court in Taxila on Wednesday sentenced five people including a doctor and a female nurse to cumulative 26 years in jail and a fine of Rs1.2 million for being involved in illegal kidney transplantation.
The civil judge Mehwish Ansari convicted the doctor, nurse and their accomplices under section 334 and 337-R of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and sections 3, 4, 9 and 10 of Punjab transplantation of human organs and tissues act 2010.
The judgr sentenced the main accused Dr Fawad Mumtaz to seven years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs1 million and nurse Subia, Abu Bakr, Sharif, and Hasnain to three years eachin prison and a fine of Rs 50, 000 each.
Taxila police registered the case on March 27, 2023 after they arrested red handed when Taxila Police and Human Organ Transplant Agency (HOTA) staff raided a house located in a society where kidney of Shahid Ali, a native of Lahore, was being transplanted to Baseer Khan, a native of Peshawar, under a deal.
