FIA registered no case against ex-president Alvi, SHC told

KARACHI: The Federal Investigation Agency on Thursday informed the Sindh High Court that no FIR had been registered against former president Dr Arif Alvi in Sindh.

However, police sought more time to file a similar report and asserted that reports on the subject had been called from police across Sindh.

At the last hearing, the SHC had directed the police and the FIA to file a complete list of cases registered against Dr Alvi in the province and such statements must be signed by Inspector General of Sindh police and the director of FIA Sindh.

When a two-judge constitutional bench of the SHC headed by Justice K.K. Agha took up the matter for hearing, a federal law officer filed a report on behalf of the director of FIA-Sindh and stated that the agency had not registered any case against the petitioner.

A provincial law officer requested for more time to file report on behalf of the Sindh police.

Therefore, the bench again directed the police to file requisite details till Jan 13 and said that its earlier interim restraining order not to arrest the petitioner would continue till next hearing.

On Dec 4, the SHC had granted 20-day protective bail to Mr Alvi, asking it to surrender before trial courts in three cases lodged in Punjab.

Mr Alvi moved the SHC and pleaded to declare illegal any move on part of the provincial government to arrest or prosecute him and to restrain the provincial authorities from detaining him or filing FIRs against him as well as sought directives for respondents to produce the record about cases registered against him.
