Strange contradiction
THIS is with reference to the report ‘NAB seeks withdrawal of reference against BoP ex-chief’ (Nov 13) about a former chief executive officer (CEO) of the Bank of Punjab (BoP), for lack of evidence after a ‘fresh’ appraisal of the case. Then came another report, ‘Court dismisses NAB plea for withdrawal of BoP reference’ (Nov 19).
If there was no evidence, why was the former CEO humiliated by seeking the help of the Interpol for his extradition from the United States in 2010? Why was he kept in jail for five years and released on bail in 2015? The same questions arose in the case of the co-accused.
While the NAB sought to withdraw the case, it was the lawyer for the BoP who opposed the request, and argued that the suspects were, indeed, guilty of opening dozens of bogus accounts that were continuously facilitated with loans worth billions of rupees. It is all a bit mind-boggling, to say the very least.
