FACE partners with Punjab govt to transform agriculture and uplift farmers
In a groundbreaking move to reshape Pakistan’s agricultural landscape, Food Security and Agriculture Centre of Excellence (FACE), a not for profit organisation, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Punjab government.
This collaboration aims to revolutionise farming practices by enhancing agricultural efficiency, boosting crop yields, and promoting climate-smart farming techniques. Under the agreement, FACE will provide technological support, facilitate access to international expertise, and assist in infrastructure development, marking a significant step in modernising agriculture for millions of farmers across the province.
Agriculture, a cornerstone of Pakistan’s economy, directly benefits 40% of the population and is the largest contributor to the national GDP. Despite its critical importance, the sector faces persistent challenges such as low productivity, outdated farming methods, and the threats posed by climate change, including erratic weather patterns, floods, and heat waves.
FACE’s comprehensive approach addresses these issues by integrating technological advancements and farmer-centric initiatives. The organisation aims to empower farmers by introducing modern techniques, training programs, and innovative tools. This partnership aims to enhance crop production and help farmers adapt to the unpredictable challenges of climate change.
At the signing ceremony, Punjab’s Agriculture Minister, Syed Ashiq Hussain, emphasised the initiative’s significance. “This partnership represents a decisive step towards improving the lives of our farmers, who are at the heart of our food security and economic stability. It is an endeavor with the potential for lasting impact,” he said. The minister praised the increasing participation of non-governmental and private organisations in the agricultural sector, highlighting that this collaboration is crucial for achieving food security and poverty alleviation at the national level.
Echoing this sentiment, Secretary of Agriculture Punjab, Iftikhar Ali Sahoo, outlined the provincial government’s vision for partnerships in mechanised farming and seed development. “The chief minister’s emphasis on private sector collaboration will be pivotal in enhancing crop quality and increasing the export value of agricultural commodities,” he noted.
FACE’s impact is already evident. In 2024, the organisation distributed subsidised certified wheat seeds, covering 15,000 acres of farmland in Punjab. It has also introduced precision agriculture techniques, including agricultural drones across 25,000 acres, enabling farmers to optimise their operations efficiently.
“We are committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of farmers across Pakistan,” said Hasan Akram, Chief Operating Officer of FACE. “Our focus remains on practical, sustainable solutions that enhance productivity, improve livelihoods, and prepare farmers to face future challenges with resilience. This partnership with the Punjab Government is a significant step towards achieving these goals.”
By fostering collaboration and innovation, FACE and the Punjab Government are setting a precedent for sustainable agricultural development that prioritises both economic progress and the well-being of farmers.
