AN ARCHITECTURAL SITE
AN ARCHITECTURAL SITE: The University Road has become an ever- evolving architectural site. Roundabouts are being constructed to ease the traffic flow from adjoining roads. The work on these roundabouts, connecting roads leading to Liaquat National Hospital, New Town, Jail Chowrangi and rightup to M.A. Jinnah Road, needs to be expe- dited. The authorities must ensure a prompt action in this critical regard.

A-LEVEL CLASSES: The Sindh Education Minister has announced plans to introduce A-level classes in government colleges. This will divide the students into two groups: those who are from well-to-do families and can afford Cam-bridge education, and the commoners who will opt for the conventional Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) stream due to their financial or other constraints. Instead of doing this, the government should improve the standard of education at the college level, review the syllabi and make the BIEK more effective. For how long will we keep on slavishly following the foreign systems that are designed for the selected elite class? Why can we not make quality education accessible to all our students?

OUTDATED POLICIES: Outdated admission policies across all universities of the country keep many students away from higher education. Unfor-tunately, universities have made biased admission formulas that consolidate these frustrating admission policies. They calculate merit on the weightage of intermediate and matriculation marks. They completely rely on these marks and ignore the distinct qualities, capa-bilities and achievements of students. This reliance on a single metric affects students’ chances of admission to higher education institutions of their choice. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) should introduce equitable evaluation methods that provide better enrolment opportunities for students.
