Ali sets record to win pursuit title

LAHORE: Ali Ilyas of the Sui Southern Gas Company set a new national record on Saturday on his way to winning the individual pursuit title on the second day of the 69th National Track Cycling Championship at the velodrome in Lahore.

Ali covered the 4,000-metre distance in four minutes, 54.54 seconds to achieve the milestone.

Overall, five events, two each for men and women and one for junior men, were decided on Saturday.

SSGC, which had won both the gold medals on the first day, secured three more on Saturday to make the overall tally to five. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan also claimed one gold medal each on Saturday.

Team Sprint (men’s elite, 1000m): 1 SSGC, 2 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 3 Punjab

Team Sprint (women’s elite): 1 SSGC, 2 Punjab, 3 Sindh

Individual Pursuit (men’s junior): 1 Usaidullah (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), 2 Sohan (Punjab), 3 Abdul Wajid (Sindh)

Individual Pursuit (women’s junior): 1 Savira Durrani (Balochistan), 2 Noor Fatima (Punjab)

Individual Pursuit (women’s elite): 1 Rajia (SSGC), 2 Kishwar (Punjab), 3 Marina (Balochistan).
