Three cops hurt in grenade attack on Preedy police station

KARACHI: Three policemen were wounded in a grenade attack on the Preedy police station in the wee hours of Saturday, officials said.

DIG-South Syed Asad Raza said unknown persons threw a hand grenade, which exploded inside the police station and wounded Riaz Ahmed, 36, Amir Zafar Iqbal, 34, and Mohammed Arshad, 52.

They were shifted to a hospital where their condition was stated to be out of danger.

The DIG said that investigators suspected involvement of either outlawed Baloch Liberation Front (BLF), Sindhudesh Revolutionary Army (SRA) or Lyari gangsters.

He pointed out that the BLF elements had attacked police with a grenade in Lyari last year and claimed its responsibility. This year, the BLF also claimed a gun attack on the Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell police.

He said Lyari gangs had also attacked police with grenades but in the recent past, no major attack on the law enforcement agencies had been carried out by them.

He said SRA had also carried out several terrorism acts across the province, targeting security personnel as well and claiming responsibility through social media networks.

About outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, he said that “Fitnatul Khawarij (FAK) elements had recently made a number of videos in Karachi” and their involvement could not be ruled out.
