From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1950: Seventy-five years ago: Shah back in Karachi

KARACHI: His Imperial Majesty the Shahinshah of Iran returned … on Tuesday [March 14] evening after a whirlwind country-wide tour… . Escorted by a Squadron of RPAF Furies, the Governor-General’s Viking carrying the Shahinshah, arrived at Drigh Road Military Airfield at 6 p.m. Khwaja Nazimuddin the Governor-General, received the Shahinshah at the Airfield. On the outer fringe of the Airfield a large crowd lined up along the railway line to greet the Shahinshah. A local train going to Landhi stopped in front of the Airfield and the passengers got down to join the reception.

A Sovereign’s Guard of Honour drawn from the trainees of the RPAF Technical School gave a Royal Salute to the Shahinshah on his arrival at the Airfield. The 14th Punjab Regimental Band played the National Anthems of Iran and Pakistan.

After inspecting the guard of honour the Shahinshah also inspected the University Air Squadron standing in front of their Tiger-Moths and the Air Scouts lined gliders. Among those present at the Airfield were Khwaja Sha­habuddin, Dr M. Mohammad Nawaz Khan, Ge­­neral Sir Douglas Gracey, Rear-Admiral J.W. Jefford and Air Vice Marshal R.L.R. Atcherley.
